History

Origin of this Institute may be traced back to pre-independence era. Beginning from the idea of a School of Archaeology under the ASI in 1944 to its formal & structural establishment in 1959 and later to the upgradation from school to an Institute in 1985, it took several decades to attain its present form. This long enduring process was a result of cumulative efforts of visionary scholars and former Director Generals of ASI like Sir Mortimer Wheeler, Padmashri Late Amalananda Ghosh, Sh. B.B. Lal and many more. Later, in 2019, the name of this Institute of Archaeology changed to Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Archaeology in order to commemorate the leader and thinker.
